BRADNINCH


A history of Bradninch published in 1910 by Charles Croslegh


The author was the vicar of St. Disens. The book, of 364 pages, was published in 1911. It covers the history of the Town, the Church, the Manor and the Barony from the early days of the settlement up to Croslegh’s time.


Not many copies were published. Several copies are known to be owned by Bradninch residents and it is believed there are copies in Exeter Cathedral, Exeter University Library, The Devon and Exeter Institution Library and Plymouth Central Library.

MEMORIES FROM THE MILL

A local history book published in 2001 by Paddy Nash.


A collection of memories and historical items of the paper mill and hamlet of Hele. Hele lies on the junctions of the parishes of Bradninch Silverton and Broadclyst, near Exeter in Devon.


The book has individual but related items; made up of recorded memories, some going back to the early twentieth century and some items from primary records and artefacts from the Mill archive items.


The book has been professionally printed by Short Run Press Ltd. It size is 225x178mm; 170 pages of items including approx. 80 pages of illustrations and photographs in black & white with two pages of colour illustration. Coloured limp cover (as pictured right), illustrated front and back.

It has individual but related items; made up of recorded memories, some going back to the early twentieth century and some items from primary records and artefacts. This book is slightly larger than the first. It has 196 pages with approx 100 illustration in black and white photographs, maps and diagrams plus two colour pages. A local history study but covers general interests of work in a Paper Mill and of rural life in Devon in the past.

GEORGE WEST
APPRENTICED PAPERMAKER TO AMERICAN CONGRESSMAN


A small local history book published in 2008 by Paddy Nash


George West had been a papermaker apprentice at the Hele Paper Mill in the 1830/40’s, who emigrated from Bradninch to America in 1849 aged 27. His wife and young son went with him and they suffered hardships before George made great headway and then his success was phenomenal. He ended up owning about 10 paper mills and 2 bag factories and became a millionaire. He also became a Member of New York State Assembly and later a Congressman of the United States of America. Historical research of his early years in Bradninch and his life in America.
